El Segundo AR Experience

In 2023, the City of El Segundo and The El Segundo Art Walk Foundation, in collaboration with Snap Inc., launched a new ambitious initiative: El Segundo AR (Augmented Reality). The interactive program has brought together artists and technologists to create new augmented reality murals, sculptures, and mosaics aimed to unify public art in El Segundo.

El Segundo AR is led by John McCullough, director of the El Segundo Art Walk Foundation, and Christian Enriquez, CEO of Reality Experience Design, a leader in AR development.  With its third installment in 2025, the program has created 11 AR installations and has reached over 3.2 million views on the Snap platform.

Visitors can experience the augmented reality experiences at site-specific locations across El Segundo including City Hall Plaza, El Segundo Public Library, Sweet Spot Media, Labib Funk & Associates, and the El Segundo Brewery. Select AR pieces can also be experienced by anyone around the world on Snap by searching for El Segundo AR or scanning the QR codes below. Read on to learn how to experience the virtual artwork in El Segundo.

The City of El Segundo has supported this project with $43,000 through its Cultural Development Fund. The fund is used to provide residential and business community members with public spaces, structures, and experiences that enhance the character of the city through the inclusion of art.

Each of the following 11 augmented reality installations throughout El Segundo were created by Reality Experience Design:

This initiative is made possible by El Segundo Art Walk, the City of El Segundo, Reality Experience Design, and Snap Inc.
THE FOX
2021
By Bunnie Reiss
Artist Bunnie Reiss brought her cosmic Fox mural to life on Grand Avenue. Through AR technology, the painted fox leaps into reality, running alongside visitors and playing with digital butterflies. Scan a QR code and step inside the art, blurring boundaries between mural and magic.
Butterfly Lands
2023
By Christian Enriquez, Ada Loong, Tess Dziallo
Celebrating El Segundo's rare blue butterfly, this AR installation makes digital butterflies float above murals and City Hall during the annual art walk. Visitors scan and watch nature come alive, honoring local environmental heritage through immersive technology that transforms familiar spaces into interactive canvases.
Moving forward
2022
By Andrew Hem
Andrew Hem's 2022 mural shows children running toward hope and possibility. The AR enhancement activates when visitors scan: butterflies flutter across painted hills, grass waves in digital breezes, and the boundary between what's painted and what's possible disappears completely. Art becomes a living experience.
Spirit of Aerospace
1997
By Scott Bloomfield
Scott Bloomfield's 1997 mural towers three stories high, celebrating El Segundo's aerospace legacy. After nearly three decades as a beloved landmark, AR breathes new life into the work. Point your phone and watch rockets launch, shuttles soar, and spacecraft move, making decades of history feel immediate and alive.
Portals to Memory
2019
By Nanibah Chacon
Nanibah Chacon's 2019 mural honors Tongva territories and native landscapes through community collaboration. Inside the library, symbolic cog stones and native plants tell stories of indigenous heritage. The 2024 AR enhancement extends this vision outdoors. Flowers wave, butterflies fly, creating accessible portals that connect past and present.
Butterfly Mosaic
2024
By Reality Experience Design
At Embassy Suites, this 2024 mosaic celebrates the federally endangered El Segundo blue butterfly. The piece captures butterflies breaking free mid-flight, symbolizing survival and transformation. AR activation brings them to life digitally, combining conservation education with art while inspiring guests to protect their tiny, fragile neighbors fighting for habitat.
Fresh Wave
2024
By Phil Roberts
Surf artist Phil Roberts created a mural and limited edition beer label for El Segundo Brew Co., celebrating Hammerland's blue collar surf culture. The AR enhanced can comes alive when scanned. The surfer leaps off the jetty, waves roll, capturing that exhilarating drop in moment. Art, craft beer, and technology breaking together.
El Segundo Sign
2025
By El Segundo Community Members, Hirsch & Associates, and Front Signs
After 50 years, the city's gateway got reimagined. Unveiled December 2024, each letter tells a story: butterflies, aerospace legacy, beaches. Inspired by vintage postcards with modern LED technology, AR activation turns the monument into an interactive portal, sparking curiosity the moment visitors arrive at Imperial and Main.
